When cut and polished these minerals will have a narrow band of light, known as chatoyancy, that moves from side to side when the stone is turned. This band of light is reminiscent of a cat’s vertical pupil. WebThe material ranges from semitranslucent to opaque. Only 10% of the material from Arizona show play-of-color. The Peruvian and Indonesian material gets its color from copper inclusions. The Oregon material gets its color from an optical phenomenon known as Rayleigh scattering.
